Investigadores de Carnegie Mellon University han logrado algo que hasta ahora se le había dificultado mucho a los científicos: Hacer que un software estudie una fotografía única, y a partir de ella poder recrear lo que aparece en ella en 3D.
Noten que esto es diferente a otras soluciones en el mercado que funcionan de manera semi-automática, en donde un humano debe marcar las esquinas y/o contornos de los objetos, y/o debe proveerle al software varias vistas alternativas para que el software deduzca el espacio 3D. En este caso, el sistema funciona muy simialar a la forma en que los humanos deducimos 3D basados en 2D.
En la foto que se muestra, la única fotografía mostrada al software es la del cuadro superior a la izquierda, las otras tres imágenes fueron realizadas por la computadora basadas en esa única fotografía.

Esto tiene muchísimas aplicaciones, pero una que me viene a la mente es para arquitectos: ¿Se imaginan tomar fotos de un casa a remodelarse y conseguir que el software reconstruya toda la casa en 3D en tu PC sin tu tener que hacer practicamente nada? También tiene aplicacions obvias en visión artificial para permitir que vehículos robots se desplacen con mas fluides en su entorno.
