How to convert a Canon EF 35-80mm Macro

Info12/23/2010
Yes, the cheap Canon EF 35-80mm f4-5.6 can be a Macro lens, and very good macro if we consider that it was not designed for it with the price / performance looks.

Suggests that with this modding can be done magnification of approximately 0.85:1 to 1.85:1 for 35mm and 80mm is very interesting! To understand the concept of "magnification" can use this article.

Let us see the steps I followed to make the change

1) Here is the Canon EF 35-80mm f4-5.6 III (versions I and II are similar in all it is easy to apply this change)

2) The first important step is to remove the part where this graphics applied to it can use the blade of a cutter (utility knife) or similar.

3) Take this piece allows us to see the 3 screws that attach the front piece of the target, with the rest of the body. This piece contains 3 glasses and serve, among other things, an autofocus ... but those will be later after

4) It is the front eyelet and removed the piece in question, we can see the 3 screws to remove (the 3 holes are not important to us, surely have used the same array to another in front of goal, or have used these holes to locate the piece in the assembly of the product)

5) It is assumed that the screws would be easily removable, but it was not. Small Phillips screwdriver used watch, pliers, sheet cutter, etc ... but to no avail, so I went a step further (and without turning back) seeing no solution and because the screw heads were starting to wear.

Made its appearance in the role battery drill with a 2mm drill bit. I hope that does not need to use a drill and do it with a screwdriver, but come to the case, use a battery drill at low speed and high torque (in general, the plugs are common to the contrary, it will not accurately holes when the piece)

6) The idea was around the screw holes to weaken the towers where they are screwed and so easily removed. Here hard at work ...

7) Once this is done in the 3 screws, I finally removed to make way for removing the front lens piece. In the 3rd picture you can see what it looks like the lens without this piece.

8) The front lens piece contains 3 lenses, among other things, serve to autofocus. To achieve convert the Canon EF 35-80mm macro they should not be more. To do this, or use the lens without this set or feed all the way around in order to achieve removal. In my view, remove and continue to use the front piece has 3 benefits: it prevents stray light unspeakable, protects the exposed lens and more importantly, allows us to mount threaded filters and place the cap on the target.
If we choose this last option, I recommend using a blade minitorno with, here are the 3 lenses and black front piece of the front of goal and cut into the base.

9) It remains to replace this piece in the front of the lens as it was originally, tightening the 3 screws in my case, with glue. Finally, we can choose to put a 52mm UV filter to prevent dust entering the interior.

Results

Finally, some pictures that I completed the modification of the lens. Do you remember the part with the graphics applied? and is very close.

Now the turn of the 3 small screws. So is the "food" that I produced with a 2mm drill bit screw

To realize the scale, these screws measuring 5 mm long and 1.5 mm in diameter of the thread.
