Banda irlandesa de rock, una de las más populares desde finales de los ochenta. Liderada por Paul Hewson (1960), más conocido como Bono, la forman el guitarra David Evans (1961), conocido como The Edge, Adam Clayton (1960) y Larry Mullen Jr. (1961).
Los cuatro futuros miembros de U2 se conocieron en la escuela en el año 1977, donde formaron un grupo llamado Feedback, que comenzó haciendo versiones de los Beach Boys y de los Rolling Stones. El nombre del grupo cambió al de The Hype antes de adoptar definitivamente el de U2 y ganar un concurso de jóvenes talentos en Limerick, a finales de marzo de 1978.
Por aquel entonces entraron en contacto con el que sería su manager a lo largo de esos años, Paul McGuiness. Su primer single, Out of control (1979), fue todo un éxito en las listas irlandesas, y comenzaron a ser considerados como una de las bandas más prometedoras del panorama irlandés, circunstancias que les llevaron a fichar por Island y a editar su primer elepé, Boy, en 1980, producido por Steve Lillywhite.
Después de su primera gira americana publicaron October, su segundo álbum, en 1981. El disco los encumbró hasta el top 20 en las listas, pero su consagración llegó con War, en 1983, que los catapultó definitivamente a la fama. El álbum contenía temas hoy clásicos como Sunday, bloody Sunday o New year's day que alcanzaron el top 20 como singles. Después vendría una gira americana en olor de multitudes, de la cual se extrajo un mini-elepé y un vídeo.
Ya en 1984, Brian Eno y Daniel Lanois produjeron el nuevo trabajo del grupo, The unforgettable fire, que supuso un cambio de dirección en la trayectoria de U2 hacia un Rock A.O.R. (Adult Oriented Rock). El grupo entró con fuerza en las listas americanas gracias al single Pride. Desde entonces mantuvieron una carrera ascendente, sobre todo a partir de la publicación de The Joshua Tree en 1987 y del doble en directo Rattle and hum en el año 1988, que tuvieron gran impacto. El "sonido U2" era ya conocido en todo el mundo.
