MARIANNE FAITHFULL Un toque de voz ronca, personalidad y feminidad al estilo inglés Si no sabes quien es Marianne Faithfull, no importa, empecemos por saber quien "era". En el Londres de los años 60, , ella era “la chica”. Tuvo un gran éxito con la canción "As Tears Go By", el primer tema que Mick Jagger y Keith Richards escribieron juntos, y se hizo novia de Mick . A finales de los 60, se convirtió en adicta a la heroína, viviendo en las calles. En 1968 quedó embarazada de Jagger, perdió el bebé, escribió "Sister Morphine" (los Stones no la pusieron en los créditos del disco), intentó suicidarse, fue arrestada y protagonista de algún que otro escándalo . Volvió al escenario en los 70, más recuperada. Su voz hoy día está un poco más dura, pero con tanta personalidad, que se vuelve irresistible. Goza de un halo especial. Aunque, para muchos, será siempre la novia de Mick Jagger. Se ponga como se ponga, Marianne, el icono del ‘swinging London’ y la cultura pop de los años sesenta, nació el 29 de diciembre de 1946 en Hampstead, Londres (Inglaterra), en el seno de una familia acomodada, siendo hija del mayor y profesor universitario de filología Gynn Faithfull y de la austríaca Eva, la baronesa Edisso, descendiente de Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, el autor del libro “La venus de las pieles”, de quien deriva la palabra masoquista. La joven rubia pasaría por un convento antes de ser descubierta. El 13 de agosto de 1964 apareció en el mercado su primer single “As tears go by”, que posteriormente los propios Stones grabarían. En 1965 contrajo matrimonio con John Dunbar, de quien se divorciaría al año siguiente tras haber dado inicio su conocida relación con Mick Jagger. La historia de Marianne Faithfull está documentada, en su autobiografía publicada en 1994. Marianne conoció al manager de los Rolling Stones, Andrew Loog Oldham en una fiesta en Londres en 1964. Por aquel entonces tenía sólo 17 años y seguía en el instituto; Oldham, cautivado por su apariencia, le ofreció grabar un disco. Pocos meses después, Marianne iniciaba su carrera artística interpretando “As Tears Go By”. El tema se coló en el Top Ten de las listas británicas en agosto de 1964.As Fue el primero de cuatro “hits”. Más tarde la interprete grabaría dos discos que alcanzaron el Top 20 en el mercado británico; ambos reflejaban un impresionante equilibrio entre las influencias más arraigadas al folk – con temas escritos por autores como Bert Jansch y Tim Hardin – y el rock. Marianne Faithfull también probó suerte como actriz, participando en la película Girl on a Motorcycle y en obras de teatro como Three Sisters (con Glenda Jackson) o el Hamlet, dirigido por Tony Richardson y co-protagonizado Anthony Hopkins y Nicol Williamson.Pese a todo, hacia finales de los años sesenta, desafortunadamente, era su vida personal – y su relación con Mick Jagger – lo único que parecía llamar la atención de los medios. No fue hasta 1979 cuando Faithfull retomó plenamente su carrera con el rompedor Broken English. El interés de la cantante por Kurt Weill y la música de la República de Weimar, se vio consumada en 1996 con la edición de 20th Century Blues. Seguidamente, en 1998, publica la opera de Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht , The Seven Deadly Sins, un disco cuya premiere tuvo lugar en el Festival de Salzburgo. El disco alcanzó los puestos más altos en las listas de música clásica de todo el mundo. Durante todo este tiempo, su carrera “comercial” sufrió un paréntesis. La interprete volvió a su “trabajo diario” con la edición del sobresaliente Vagabond Ways en 1999. Marianne también regresa entonces a la gran pantalla co-protagonizando Intimidad (Patrice Chéreau, 2001), ganadora del premio a la mejor película en el Festival de Cine de Berlín de ese año. En una entrevista : "Mi historia es una afirmación de mi fuerza y también de mi suerte —dice—. Vivir con un gran artista como Ted Hughes o Mick Jagger es algo muy destructivo para una mujer que trata de ser ella misma. De hecho, no puede hacerlo. Una se sacrifica en el altar o se va. Hace muchos años que siento que la vida es algo precioso, desde que abandoné las drogas y recobré el sentido." Calcula que pueden quedarle veinte años de vida. Tras la edición del disco Kissin´ Time, inicia una gira mundial, la más ambiciosa de su carrera, que no le impidió ir planificando su siguiente y último trabajo hasta la fecha. El resultado fue Before The Poison, un disco que contiene alguno de los momentos más pletóricos e inspirados de la prolongada y distinguida carrera artística de Marianne Faithfull. El disco contó con la colaboración de músicos tan prestigiosos como PJ Harvey, Nick Cave o Damon Albarn. ACTUACIÓN Dato curioso: En el cine, se dice que fue la primera persona en decir “fuck” en una película de grandes estudios,” en el filme “I’ll Never Forget What’s ‘Isname” Hace poco ha rodado María Antonieta, de Sofia Coppola. La hemos visto en Paris je t’aime, en el segmento "Le marais", dirigido por Gus Van Sant. Recibió merecidos aplaudos en “Irina Palm” a una mujer madura que intenta reunir dinero para pagar el carísimo tratamiento de Olly, su nieto enfermo. Finalmente, acaba aceptando un trabajo de lo más inesperado en un local de prostitución al que entra pensando que buscan una “azafata” cuando lo que en realidad quieren es una pajillera con buena mano. El filme demuestra cómo cualquier vida rutinaria puede dar un giro de ciento ochenta grados. Siempre me han llamado la atención las historias en las que los personajes se ven envueltos en situaciones para las que no están preparados. Los suburbios de Londres se entremezclan con un cúmulo de emociones y con todas las cosas que se pueden llegar a hacer por amor y por desesperación. En sus 40 años de vida artística también ha trabajado en teatro y televisión. Fue la artista invitada que encarnaba a Dios en la tercera y última temporada de la serie británica de culto "Absolutely Fabulous". En 2004 y 2005 estuvo en los escenarios de Londres y San Francisco en el papel de El Diablo en el musical "The Black Rider", dirigido por Robert Wilson, escrito por William Burroughs y Tom Waits. Fue parte del reparto coral de la ópera rock "The Wall" que se escenificó en Berlín en 1990. Su inmersión en la obra de Bertolt Brecht y Kurt Weill tuvo como resultado algunas de sus actuaciones más memorables. En 1993 interpretó a la Pirata Jenny en "La ópera de perra gorda", en el Dublin’s Gate Theatre. Su fascinación por la música de esa época la llevó a grabar el álbum "20th Century Blues", lanzado en 1996, y a realizar una gira. Dr. Dog es uno de mis grupos favoritos, son especialistas en modelar melodías imposibles... repletas de matices, las armonías vocales que logran también son muy atractivas. Se los podría catalogar como una banda neo-beat, con múltiples influencias sobre todo por aquellos grupos de la década de 1960. Sus primeras grabaciones tienen algo de lo-fi y del pop de bandas de rock indie de los 90, como Guided By Voices y Pavement. Los primeros álbums cuentan con un sonido más rústico mientras que los más recientes ofrecen una producción más trabajada. Si bien sus raíces están en los clásicos como los Beatles y los Beach Boys, mantienen su propia idiosincrasia y originalidad ,marcando una interesantísima línea entre la tradición y experimentación. The Veils es una banda de pop-rock alternativo compuesta por Finn Andrews (guitarra, voz, piano), Sofía Burn (bajo), Dan Raishbrook (guitarra, odd noise) y Henning Dietz (batería). Aunque su nombre figura en varios de los mejores discos de rock publicados durante las tres últimas décadas desde "Prayers on fire"(The Birthday Party) hasta "Let England shake"(PJ Harvey), la carrera en solitario de Mick Harvey es una sucesión de discos tan entrañables como intrascendentes. Discos que o bien recogían su discreta labor como compositor de bandas sonoras (discreta porque la música del australiano es raramente invasiva, prefiere adornar los planos de fondo con delicadeza), o bien basaban el grueso de su repertorio en canciones de otros artistas, a las que gustaba de mirar desde otro ángulo. Parecía que nuestro hombre estaba condenado a regalar su talento a otros, a ejercer de gregario por el resto de sus días, y es por eso por lo que resulta tan importante "Sketches from the book of the dead", porque es un disco de renacimiento y reinvención, el disco con el que Harvey enfrenta a sus fantasmas y deja atrás el pasado. Lo de los fantasmas no es retórico, cada uno de los temas del disco está dedicado a alguien que fue importante para él y que ya ha desaparecido, de ahí el tono sombrío que tienen la mayoría de las canciones.
